The Virgin Islands and Their Celebrity Residents
The chance of meeting celebrities is not rare when in the Virgin Islands, but some of them might not just be there for a visit–they actually live there or even grew up on one of these many stunning islands. The United States Virgin Islands and the British Virgin Islands each have their fare share of famous residents, ranging from actors, musicians, business magnates and athletes.
Actor, director and producer Kelsey Grammer, or more famously known as Dr. Frasier Crane on the sitcoms Cheers and Frasier, is a proud son of St. Thomas. His father was a musician and owner of a coffee shop and a bar & grill called Greer’s Place on the island before his death.
Although country singer Kenny Chesney was born in Knoxville, Tennessee, he definitely found his home (several of them) in the Virgin Islands. He has homes on St. John and sings about the islands and its beauty in many of his songs. His wedding to actress Renee Zellweger occurred on Peter Bay (near Trunk Bay) on St. John. The music video for his song, No Shoes, No Shirt, No Problems, was filmed on and around Jost Van Dyke at Ivan’s Stress Free Bar, off Sandy Spit, and other famous locations in the British Virgin Islands.
San Antonio Spurs basketball superstar Tim Duncan is another product of the United States Virgin Islands. He was born in Christiansted, a town in St. Croix and studied at St. Dunstan’s Episcopal High School, where he started to play basketball on the 9th grade.
Virgin’s Sir Richard Branson and Morgan Freeman are two examples of prominent personalities taking residence in the British Virgin Islands. The English business magnate Branson, has an estate on Necker Island, an island which he personally own. While Mr. Freeman has several properties in Virgin Gorda, where you might see him on the dock aboard his sailboat at the Virgin Gorda Yacht Harbor.
If you don’t run into famous Hollywood actors, stars and athletes on your Virgin Islands trip, don’t worry, you’ll still have your vacation in paradise. The islands have world renowned residents and those that you will absolutely enjoy visiting. The Baths in Virgin Gorda and the Caves in Norman Island, both in the British Virgin Islands, as well as Magen’s Bay in St. Thomas and Trunk Bay in St. John in USVI, just to name a few.
Erase the thought that the only famous Virgin Islands residents are the majestic green sea turtles, schools of angel fish and elegant rays that greet you while snorkeling their lush coral reefs. The islands hide more famous people and celebrities than you may have originally thought.
