The Dominican Country Ensign
I have visited a good number of countries in my younger years, including the Dominican Republic, which is located in the Caribbean. We traveled to this part of the world after having visited Paris in 2001, during the Christmas season. Even though are stay was only a handful of days; we have become determined to travel back to the Dominican Republic one day.
Like other countries of the world, the Dominican Republic flies a beautiful flag from their respective flag poles. This ensign was adopted in 1844, making a relatively old banner. Proudly designed by Juan Pablo Duarte, this gentleman also founded a secret society called the “Trinitaria.” In fact, it was under their direction and lead that the Dominican Republic separated from Haiti and established independence.
The use of colors is, not surprisingly, similar to the use of the colors in the flag design of Haiti. The colors blue and red represent freedom and the numerous sacrifices the people of the republic were called upon to make for the sake of independence. The national ensign is hence a reminder of this. The white cross featured on this flag symbolizes the main stream religion of the republic.
It is my understanding that this territory was under rule of the Spanish for some three hundred years! The French as the well the Haitians, also rules the territory for interludes. The republic was proclaimed independent in 1821, which did not mean much to the Dominican people since the new ruler(s) maintained slavery and very limited rights for a substantial portion of the territory’s inhabitants.
As aforementioned, other flag-variants are hosted on Dominican flag poles. These ensigns include and are called: the air force-, the naval-, and the Presidential ensign. The republic’s army also flies their unique design. Like the national banner, the ratio of these historic flags is also two to three.
The folks in this country and on this island speak mostly Spanish. Some ten million people inhabit this republic, and with nearly 19,000 square miles, the Dominican Republic is the 2nd largest nation in the area of the Caribbean. Also, the republic also has the second largest economy in the Caribbean, which I find interesting considering the number of afflicted people I saw out there during my visit to the eastern part of the territory.
I really enjoyed my stayed in the area of Punta Cana back in 2001. What a great time we had as a family, celebrating Christmas is this very special part of the world. I recall sitting on the beach enjoying the incredible Caribbean type scenery, a wonderful breeze that may the national flag display incredibly from worn commercial flagpoles in the area.
I have always had a special interest in flag poles and commercial flagpoles.
