Chinese women were educated about the significance of family from a very early age and were taught the skills of maintaining the peace and harmony of the family under all circumstances. It was considered the foremost duty of the females to look after the well being of every member of the family and keep the various factions united. In fact, it was quite normal for three or even four generations of a family to live under a single roof. Although the families living in villages usually shared four or five surnames between them, it was also not uncommon for all families in a village to have the same surname.
However with the changing socio-economic conditions and the growth in population, this social unit faced extreme stress. Growing expenses of health and food forced many big families to split up into smaller units and seek avenues of employment and growth in diverse areas. Although, this consequently resulted in decreasing the average size of the families, it had little impact on the importance of family as a social unit. The Chinese women were still expected to carry on the traditional duties of caring for their now smaller families and keeping the members united and deeply attached. With the improved socio-economic conditions, the quality of life in average Chinese families also became better and more secure.
In the present times, the concept of having large joint families is mostly restricted to rural parts of China. In most major cities, the families generally consist of only the parents and the children. However, irrespective of such diverse conditions, the family lives are generally quite stable. For most Chinese women, stability and dedication towards family ties is still the most important aspect of their lives
