Is shredding safe?
We all think that using paper shredders is a safe and reliable way to destroy your important documents. Well you have to be very careful as it is possible to have your documents reconstructed after they have been destroyed by an office shredder or home shredders.
It’s very simple really; if the paper shredder does not cut the paper into tiny sizes then it is very easy to reassemble the document with a bit of imagination and patience. That is why it is always prudent to purchase crosscut shredder. A crosscut shredder will cut a piece of paper into about 350 pieces whereas a straight cut shredder will cut the paper into 30 pieces of paper.
In fact, major international relations have been compromised on occasion because of poor shredding practices. In 1979, after the Iranian revolution, the Iranians hired local carpet weavers to reconstruct shredded documents from the US embassy; these documents were later released in a book.
More recently, the authorities investigating the Enron scandal hired expert companies to successfully reconstruct shredded documents. This happened, because they used straight cut shredders and not a cross cut shredder.
