Cairns best dive sites

Cairns, Australia is a popular scuba dive travel location with arguably the best Great Barrier Reef diving and snorkeling out there .Thousands of visitors are ferried out everyday by the large catamarans to snorkel and scuba dive the large number of offshore reefs and participate in the many marine attractions available.

Agincourt Reefs.
Two permanent platforms, operated by Quicksilver Cruises, are moored on the Agincourt Ribbon Reefs, allowing access to various quality dive sites.The platforms are very well organised and safety proceedures for snorkeling and scuba diving are among the highest in the world. The Channels offer breathtaking swim-thru’s and caverns, while The Gardens are known for their exceptional abundance of brightly-coloured reef fish.Blue Wonder is an amazing wall dive to more than 40 m, while Nursery Bommie is an awe inspiring bommie where pelagic fish school to feed.

Norman Reef.
The location of Great Adventure’s platform, Norman Reef has many quality dive sites along its ocean side. Coral gardens are abundent in the shallows, and divers often see reef sharks, gropers, turtles and pelagic fish patrolling the 30 m drop-off.

Hasting Reef.
Pinnacles, walls, caves and coral gardens are all on offer at Hastings Reef. Gorgonians, soft corals and sea whips adorn the walls and bommies. Reef and pelagic fish are numerous, and stingrays, Maori wrasse, moray eels and reef sharks are frequently observed. Underwater photographers will find themselves in heaven,with everything from pretty nudibranchs to schools of trevally.

Michaelmas Reef.
Typical of many reefs in the area, Michaelmas Cay has healthy coral gardens and a number ofbommies. The pinnacles, regularly frequented by pelagic fish and packed with soft corals and gorgonians, offer the best diving.

Thetford Reef.
Underwater-photographers will find plenty of nudibranchs, tubeworms, crabs, brightly-coloured reef fish and interesting corals as models in the coral gardens on Thetford Reef.

Briggs Reef.
The reef wall along the southern side of Briggs Reef drops into 30 m of water, and is covered in an astounding variety of corals. Along the wall swim batfish, parrotfish and the occasional pelagic species. On top of the reef is a coral garden where angelfish, stingrays, wrasse and many other species can be found in good numbers.

Sudbury Reef.
Shallow coral gardens and walls to 35 m can be found on Sudbury Reef. Reef fish are everywhere. You are also likely to see leatherback turtles and Queensland gropers.
