Project managers – why underrated?
Any large project management’s crucial element in a multinational or global company’s strategy, is in trouble and threatening to derail the venture’s future. This scenario encases the biased view many hold for the way project management certification is being considered and explain the reason paradoxically, project management is an attractive career option and opportunity for virtually recession-proof and demand.
Professional service providers are always of view that there is constant shortage of certified project managers. The project manager’s position is underrated because most of the people do not fully incorporate the skillsas well as Project Management Certification that a good project manager is expected to bring to the table.
Also, if PMP Exam Prep done well, appears to be effortless, but when done badly it can also cost a lot of money to put right. However, too many large and known projects such as the UK government’s National Health Service project is a typical example, that landed into trouble publicly. This is one reason why the three main nodal bodies: the Project Management Institute, headquartered in the US; the UK-based Project Management Association; and the UK government backed Project Management Association Group – are working hard to raise the quality of project management certification.
These institutions have been set uo to transform what was poorly defined, into a professional discipline with their own Project Management Certification, methodologies and standards.
The PMI offers, for example, PMP Courses leading to the Professional Project Management Certification, PMP qualification, an accreditation with common standards across various countries. A certified project manager with five years related experience of running projects would qualify for the APM’s Certificated Project Manager Award, while the APMG’s awards depend on mastery of its Projects in Controlled Environments methodology.
The Project Management Institutes’s Global Accreditation Center recognises 40 PMP Course at universities globally. However a good project management skill takes time to be developed and experience to be honored . A successful project manager is born through a process of mentoring and understanding.
Project management discipline, however, still remains not well defined: according to one of the president of the UK: “If you ask 10 people and you will get 10 different answers.”
He phrases the PMI definition as “It lays emphasis on the strategic nature of project within organisations and on the fact that it PM is all about achieving business results. It is much like an art than a science.
