Secretary on Thin Ice
Unknown to me at the time, my secretary was incompetent. I had hired her assuming that her qualifications were accurate, and that she would be able to handle the workload given to her. This was not the case, as I would soon figure out on a recent trip to London. She had booked the flights and the hotels that I desired, and everything seemed to be going as planned. The conference was nearly over when I received a frantic phone call from my office back in Toronto. Apparently, she forgot to double check the flight dates and I was to be on my flight in an hour; an impossible task, considering London traffic. I was furious at the thought of having to pay for a cancellation fee, but I did need to get home by the weekend. Thus, I told her to take care of it, and left the conversation with a bitter taste in my mouth.
Things only got worse from there. Apparently all the direct flights were booked solid for the next few days, making it impossible for me to return home at the desired time. I would have to fly to Scotland and then to Toronto, in order to remain on schedule. This really ticked me off, but I did not let her know it over the phone. I must admit that she did do one thing correct during that very moment, she did book me into a Short break Scotland hotel, one of the finest in the country. Apparently she had done some research into the Short breaks Scotland hotels, and was attempting to smooth things over with me. It was working. My Short break Scotland hotel was amazing, and I would strongly recommend to anyone considering Scotland as a travel destination to look into Short breaks Scotland.
Needless to say, I did not relieve her of her duties, thanks to her ability to book such an amazing hotel. I realise that mistakes happen, but I do keep a close eye on my flight schedules now, and she is on thin ice.
