Golf Blue-E-Motion Wins Future Car Challenge
A pre-production version of the Volkswagen Golf Blue-e-Motion electric vehicle has triumphed in this year’s RAC Future Car Challenge. The car used the least energy in its class over the 57-mile route from Madeira Drive in Brighton to London’s Pall Mall.
The event, which featured hybrids and fuel cell models as well as highly efficient diesel vehicles, saw the Golf named Most Energy Efficient Regular Car (Prototype). The model is powered by lithium-ion batteries and an electric motor that offers a maximum output of 115 PS and a range of about 100 miles. The Golf Blue-e-Motion has a top speed of 86mph and can reach 62mh in a respectable 11.8 seconds.
The winning vehicle was driven by Folko Rohde, an engineer for Volkswagen, and his co-pilot Fabienne Kleinert and is one of two Golf Blue-e-Motion models that took part. The second vehicle won the event last year. A production Volkswagen Passat BlueMotion also entered the challenge and was driven by motoring journalist Richard Aucock and his co-driver, Ed China. The car is powered by a 1.6-litre diesel engine and has a fuel economy of 68.9 mpg.
On arriving in London on Saturday 5th November, both Golf Blue-e-Motions had their data recorders removed by the RAC scrutineers. The models then joined the other competing vehicles in a display held in the centre of the capital as part of the inaugural Regent Street Motor Show.
Volkswagen is planning a production version of the Golf Blue-e-Motion for late 2013. The new Volkswagen Passat BlueMotion is already available to be purchased at dealers across the UK.
