Piri Reis Map – Some Basic Information About It
The Piri Reis Map is one of the greatest discoveries of the 20th century. This map was drawn on the skin of a gazelle. It is actually a genuine document that was drafted by the famous Turkish fleet Admiral, Piri Reis during the early 16th century (cerca 1513). This was no ordinary admiral. He had an extraordinary passion for cartography. Because of his ranking, he was allowed prestigious access to the Imperial Library of Constantinople which allowed him to further broaden his knowledge about map making and the world. Notes that were left on the map document that the admiral compiled a large amount of this data from other maps which had dated back to as early as the fourth century BC and quite possibly earlier resources.
But no great discovery goes without controversy. The Piri Reis map consists of the western coast of Africa, the eastern coast of South America where Brazil and Argentina are today and the northern coast of Antarctica. The strange part is that during the times of Piri Reis, Antarctica had not been discovered yet so how could this perfectly drawn coastline of Antarctica be present on his map? But even if we had missed something and Antarctica had been discovered by an earlier source, the mystifying part about the Piri Reis map is that the coastline of Antarctica is drawn under the ice. According to scientists of the modern day, our geological evidence shows that the latest date that this area could have been visited without ice was in 4000 BC.
So why is all of this fascinating and mind-blowing? Science says that the ice cap that currently covers Antarctica is a million years old. However, this map indicates otherwise. It shows the northern part 9a0-146of the continent before the ice was there. This either means that the map is a million years old or that somehow the science is wrong. Likely, the science has to be wrong or Piri Reis had quite an imagination because mankind was nonexistent a million years ago.
The latest scientific studies show that the last time that this area of Antarctica was ice-free was approximately 6000 years ago. There are many researchers who debate that this ice-free period began anywhere from 13000 to 9000 BC. This area, known as the Queen Maud Land of Antarctica, is quite mystifying because we do not know exactly when it was mapped, who mapped it and how in the world that this person or group of people had the technology to do so.
Ancient civilizations began appearing around 3000 BC in the Middle East. The current day India in the Indus Valley and the Chinese civilizations rose9a0-142 shortly thereafter. However, we are talking at least 4000 BC, so how was this map made possible with such a great amount of detail and accuracy that only up until today with our modern technology that we can do this and verify the accuracy of this ancient map.
