David Norris – A Vocal President!
Sunday 08th October, 2011
A blustery fresh Sunday morning in Dun Laoghaire market, letting myself forget about the daily challenges of Office Supplies and Office Furniture. A fresh coffee, a piece of carrot cake and a Sunday Times. Bliss!
Already depressed from the rugby result on Saturday, I was clearly going through the 7 stages of grief – disbelief, anger, acceptance…..etc..etc. Just as I settled into the review of the Sunday Times rugby coverage, I thought I was dreaming when I heard the Joycean like, Presidential candidate, David Norris in the distance. My God, his voice packs a punch. Suddenly, my peaceful morning was shattered. I most definitely considered running away as Norris approached. Instead, I buried my head in page 3 of the Sunday Times. Hey presto, there he is, in my face. I find myself smiling and shaking hands with the colourful David Norris. Was my dream turning into a nightmare?
So, as I think my morning can only get better, he sits down on the wall beside me. Photographers in tow. Good grief! We began to chat; he asked me do I come here often!!!!…..ehhhhh No! He then asked what I do for a living? I told him we run the best online office supplies and office furniture website in Ireland. I continued to explain the challenges of selling paper punches and whiteboards in Dublin and office furniture in Cork. In fairness to Norris, he took a great interest in my wares, he particularly wanted to talk about office seating…..I told him we would gladly supply a presidential executive office chair for the Aras if he was successful. Was I beginning to sway towards a Norris vote?
So we continued to chat as he nibbled on his punnet of raspberries. We continued to discuss the challenges and expense of running a small office supply company in Ireland. He was interested in how we compete with multi-nationals who have much bigger buying power. It is our model I explained, little or no overheads other than staff. No warehousing, no vans and no catalogues. I continued to explain that we use an extensive range of office products wholesalers and piggy back on their logistics.
So as our chat came to a close we exchanged a hearty handshake. Has he won my vote? Only time will tell. Now, back to my Sunday times.
Love your office
