LPG – The Lowdown

Consumers are getting more and more knowledgeable about the electric vehicles on the market, but LPGs (Liquefied Petroleum Gas) vehicles are another, greener option that many know relatively little about.

Liquefied Petroleum Gas mixes are primarily of propane and butane and evaporate quickly at normal temperatures. The fuel has actually been used in some countries since the 1940s as a petrol alternative for spark ignition engines. It is said to be 40% cheaper when compared with petrol and 20% cheaper when compared to diesel. Fuel consumption is also reduced when using this type of fuel, but sources seem to be undecided on whether Co2 emissions are reduced or not. Either way, it burns more cleanly than petrol or fuel-oil and is comparatively free from particulates.

Not all engines are suitable for using LPG. Modifications such as valve alterations often need to be made, as LPG fueled units are more likely to wear valves. Many modern common rail diesel engines respond well to LPG in combination with the diesel. Having your car converted can be a fairly straight forward process and prices are the region of £1200. You can check online to find a place to get your car converted, as trying to find a Ford for sale in Kidderminster that is already LPG compatible could be a tough job!

Although seen as a potential alternative to regular fuel, LPG is still derived from fossil fuels and is therefore finite, unlike electricity. As a long term solution, it isn’t viable, but in the short term it may just save you a little money and improve fuel consumption.
