Vascular Disease and How It Can Be Prevented

Vascular disease is a form of cardiovascular disease that mainly affects the blood vessels and is caused by hardening of the arteries or also known as atherosclerosis. If the usual process of heart pumping blood to the other parts of the body and veins return it is interrupted, an individual might experience any of the following:

Aneurysm – An unusual swelling forms in the wall of a blood vessel and it usually occurs in the main blood vessel leaving the heart or aorta. Two types of aortic aneurysm is known as of today, the Thoracic aortic aneurysm and the Abdominal aortic aneurysm.

Renal or Kidney Artery Disease – this often occurs to people with generalized vascular disease and some may be even caused by congenital abnormal development of the tissues that build or make up the renal arteries.

Peripheral Artery disease – The blood vessels outside your heart may also develop atherosclerosis and the plaque, or build-up of fats and cholesterol deposits on the inside walls may cause this. This build-up will eventually narrow the arteries, making it hard for the blood to flow and ischemia, or the inadequate blood flow to the tissues of the body may occur.

There are several risk factors that medical professionals consider why such diseases occur. An unhealthy lifestyle is one of the major factors that complicate this kind of disease and this include cigarette smoking, unhealthy diet, being overweight, lack of exercise, stress, high cholesterol levels, and high blood pressure. The medical history of a person may also be a factor especially if one of his relatives has already suffered stroke and heart attacks.

Vascular disease are also more common to men than women maybe because a larger percentage of the male population are more prone to smoking, drinking, and unhealthy lifestyle but this fact still does not exclude women from suffering from this disease.

But there are still ways of preventing this health condition from happening to an individual. Doctors say that a person should stop smoking because it was proven to reduce the risk of cardiac problems by at least 50 percent after a year of quitting.

Eating a balanced diet and having the right amount of nutrients for the body will also lessen the possibilities of getting this disease. Food with saturated fats must be avoided and eat lots of vegetables and products with high amount of fiber instead.

Those who are overweight may also start considering losing some pounds by exercising and watching what they eat. Reducing their weight may also prevent them from having high blood pressures and diabetes which are two of the most common and most fatal factors of this type of disease.

We may not give much importance to healthy living and taking care of our bodies properly but this prove to be the most effective way of reducing the risk of certain fatal health problems. Learning more about vascular disease, its risk factors, and the ways to prevent and detect it will surely be a lot of help to all individuals and also to encourage them to give their health more attention and care.
