Luke Donald with still a lot to prove

Following Luke Donald’s win at the Disney Classic in Florida it meant he became the first golfer in history to win both the European and American money lists.  However the golf critics are still out for his blood as he is still yet to win one of the four golden majors: The Masters, US Open, British Open or USPGA.

It will be essential that Luke has a brilliant  sports PR agency in place at the beginning of next year so that he does not become rattled in press conferences where he will be asked constantly “Do you think you have what it takes to win a major?” And “Do you think you deserve to be world number world one without one”.  Of course Luke does have the skills to win the major but he must keep his mind on the golf course and not get distracted by what is being talked about off the course.

Luke finds himself in a very similar situation the female tennis players Caroline Wozniacki, Jelena Jankovic and Dinara Safina who have each become number one in the world but without winning a major. The three women had such poor reputation management in place that every day they would read negative comments in the media which then had a massive effect on their form.

It might be an idea for Luke to hire a sports psychologist to help keep his mind in check and focused on the game, as he cannot expect his PR agency to prevent any negative stories coming out about him.  Perhaps he should take inspiration from Darren Clarke who hired a top sports psychologist at the beginning of 2011 because many people had written off his chances of becoming a major winner and he ended up winning The Open at the age of 48 by six shots.

No one doubts that Luke has the form to win a major but some have a terrible feeling that by the end of the year, he could be out of the top twenty and having to call on crisis PR agencies to prevent further harassment from the media in the UK.

The 2012 golf season is set to be another fascinating year with Rory Mcilroy looking to take his play up to another level, Luke attempting to win his first major and the hope that Tiger Woods can come back into the fold.
