Your Dream Personal Assistant Realized: Meet Siri and Speaktoit
Were you one of the folks who anxiously awaited the release of the iPhone4S or are you a die-hard Droid devotee? Whether you’re on Team Apple or Android; these two programs can seriously change the way you take care of business. Read on to learn more about Apple’s Siri and Android’s Speaktoit.
Who/what is Siri? Siri is a speech recognition feature built-in on the Iphone4S, it’s not an app. It’s like a personal assistant who you can “talk” to and it talks back-minus the attitude. Let’s say you need your alarm set at 5am, want to find the nearest smoothie shop, or need to send a text-Siri does it all by voice recognition. By the way, the software sends commands through a remote server, so you have to be connected to Wi-Fi or a 3G signal in order to communicate with your personal assistant. Siri also takes dictation, writes and sends emails and texts, searches the web, plays music, and gives you directions.
Siri is currently in beta so as of now so you are only able to fully utilize the application with American English. There are some other English languages as well as German and French that can be used with Siri but with limitations. The good thing is that Siri will likely only get better as it’s in beta and Apple is said to be collecting data from users so your input will help shape the future of Siri.
Speaktoit is Android’s mobile voice assistant. There are some similarities between Speaktoit and Siri as they both respond to human dialogue and recognizes conversational context. Speaktoit can also send email and texts, look up information on the web, take dictation, make calls, translate foreign languages, post tweets and update Facebook, etc.
Speaktoit has one special feature that sets it apart from Siri; you can create an avatar to spice up your conversations with your personal assistant. The Speaktoit avatars remind me of the Yahoo avatars I created in the past where you can dress up and accessorize your mini me. There is also the option to just have the microphone up if you choose to keep things simple.
Make your day easier and feel like a top notch executive with your very own assistant! If you’ve used either Siri or Speaktoit, I’d love to hear your thoughts on either program.
