The Importance of Dress up Games in a Child’s Development

Children love to dress up, either in their parent’s clothes or in some fancy costumes. It is one healthy way to promote a child’s development and understanding of the world. This is the reason why there are shows at school that makes children wear different costumes and play different roles.

Children are often shy and have difficulty relating to others especially when they just turned into toddlers. Eventually, as these toddlers turn to pre school age, the first few days of school is a very terrible time both for parents and the preschoolers. Children tend to be afraid being left alone at school, fearing they now have to mingle with other kids and the new image of the teacher. One healthy way to build confidence and encourage children to socialize is dressing up. When they turn toddlers, parents could start at this early age to organize play groups among friends and neighbours. A helpful social activity for the play group could be a dress up game or dress up play.  There are lots of costumes available for these activities.

Dress up games and plays may help them develop their social awareness and could be a great start for parents to learn what their interests are. For instance, children may dress up as a doctor and play a scene as responsible adult telling his patients to eat healthy foods; fireman acting to put off a fire or help a little girl; a dentist teaching his patient how to properly brush his teeth; or policeman acting in authoritative manner. These roles children play can bring out the best in them. Better yet, it can be a good foundation in building self-confidence.

The most classical are animal costumes  for  little children. At this young age, children would love to play as their favorite animals, making sounds and gestures they are familiar with such as cat, mouse, lion, bear, elephant, dinosaur and many others where little children can be free to express themselves without inhibitions. At the same time they can also interact with other toddlers their age, dressing in other animal costumes. In this way, they can be socially prepared to attend school later.  As they get older, kids learn many roles played by adults in the community.

Dressing up can also make children adventurous. They can explore and let go of their feelings, making them less timid and more open for new ideas. No wonder, even adults love to dress up in costume parties. It gives an outlet to let one’s self be free. Some adventurous costume ideas that could take that shy away from kids are; pirate, where he can act silly and speak a strange accent, cowboy, where he can wear a pair of boots and a matching hat pretending to live in the wild west; a fairy where she can play generous and grant wishes; or a princess in a pretty dress. No matter what the age there are costumes that are available for children to dress up with. Encouraging and even organising dress up activities can help children in their growth and development in so many ways, the best part is they are more than willing to participate because it is fun and exciting.
