Broadband Access in Bulgaria

Many people who visit http://www.housesalesbulgaria.com/ are considering moving either part time or full time to a new property in Bulgaria, and intend to work from their new location using broadband high speed internet.

Broadband connections and options on providers and deals are possible in Bulgaria, and as real estate in Bulgaria has become more sought after by foreign investors and private individuals, it has become increasingly important that high speed internet is available throughout the country.

As far back as 2002 there have been technical issues surrounding the installation of both underground and overhead cables and wiring, and rival companies refusing each other access to their systems, arguing over market dominance guidelines and so on. However, in recent years faster and more convenient technology has made it possible for the vast majority of Bulgarian homes to benefit from some level of internet access.

In 2009, Bulgaria’s ‘State Agency for Information Technologies and Communication’ recognised the need for properties in Bulgaria to have reliable internet and set out a ‘National Program for Development of Broadband Access in Republic of Bulgaria‘ which created guidelines of what it hoped to achieve for internet availability across the country by 2013. It quoted an aim of at least 10mb speed in large cities, 6mb in medium cities and 1mb in rural areas, (however for only 30%). The Agency hoped to have 90% mobile broadband access throughout rural areas, which may be important to some prospective home owners.

Most Bulgarian homes will be able to get some sort of internet coverage, but it is important to remember that speeds are highly variable depending on specific location, terrain and how populated the local area is. Towns and cities are more likely to have a fast and reliable connection, and it is best to find out if a connection is possible from neighbours and local authorities before comitting to purchase real estate in Bulgaria if a high speed connection is going to be essential.

Of course many people buy a Bulgarian home in the hopes of being unavailable for a period of time each year to relax and escape from their busy home life. For them it doesn‘t matter if there is no internet connection, and in an emergency they can travel to the nearest internet cafe and use the facilities to book a flight home or send an email.

Both locals and immigrants to Bulgaria are benefitting from the improved internet coverage, with Internet World Statistics showing that 47.5% of the population (nearly 4million users) logged on in 2010, up from just 430,000 in 2000. This is a huge rise, and accessibility is still increasing. It is unknown when Bulgaria will have internet access similar to that in European countries, but some British ex-pats claim that progress is slow, access can be less than reliable and that prospective buyers visiting http://www.housesalesbulgaria.com/ should examine their planned location carefully before committing to property in Bulgaria.
