The IWC Ingenieur is regarded by many as one of the most solid watches in this era. And replica watch manufacturers have been keeping improved the replica versions. And I was very lucky to get good one from an online replica watch dealer three months ago. Here I would like to do a gen vs. rep review for this watch.
The case is solidly constructed. It composed of bezel, body and case back. The overall finishing is excellent. Not a single sharp edge is spotted. And the surfaces is well brushed or polished to details.You know even My friend Andy, a good watchsmith, could not pick a flaw about the finishing.
The case back is nicely made as well. But the engravings are not as sharp as the gen. The “Ingenieur – International Watch Co.” should have been polished. And the “Co.” should be “CO.”
While the gen is water resistant to 120 meters, this replica has 50-meter water resistance, thanks to its screw-in crown. To ensure the performance, your need to make sure your caseback and crown are screw-in properly!
The crown has nice engravings too, though not as deep as the gen. And on the rep crown, just the IWC is polished, whereas the gen crown is polished on the the whole surface.
The bezel with the five holes goes back to the Genta classic, where the holes are used to screw it in and water tighten the case. Due to that there is hardly a single one with an aligned bezel. On the 2005 relaunched version the rep tries to imitate, the bezel is pressed in so the holes are only for cosmetically and homage reasons and therefore perfectly aligned. Unfortunately, the rep makers did not notice that and a lot of reps I have seen, have that flaw.
The gen houses the Movement 80110 that IWC claimed as an in-house movement. In fact, this movement is basically a 7750 but with shock absorbed rotor and pellaton winding system. And inside the replica beats a solid ETA 2824-2 which is now applied in high quality watches.
The dial of the rep is a piece of art. It copies the the “Ingenieur-Structure” pretty well, and thus looks different and has a glow from certain angles.
The lume is not strong, on the rep as well as on the genuine.
The hands are fat , so it is easy to read the time from them. However, they are a bot short. What is worse, it is difficult to fix this flaw as genuine hands are very expensive and very hard to source. Even if you are able to find them, you need to do some modification since they are of the the size of an ETA 7750 and will not a 2824-2.
The crystal is made from sapphire and on the authentic watch it is heavily double ARed. Really heavy. It does not shine all bluish like the ARed crystals of some replicas do. It simply disappears. The replica does not even use singlesided AR and due to that, the beauty of the dial structure does not come out. It reflects awful, too, which decreases the read out thoroughgoing.
The bracelet-system feels high-class on the wrist. There are no sharp edges or hair-tugging spaces. It is designed to fit straight into the watch and gives a nice sound when bending it. My clasp is locking and unlocking very smooth and it does not open by accident. The engraved IWC looks sharp.
Overall, it is a 90% perfect replica. I can accept its flaws, just like i can have fun from my wife’s flaws. Now it is on my wrist every day.
