To Save Your Car’s Finish, Choose the Right Wax Applicator!

If you’re still applying wax to your car, this means you have a classic or you’re very concerned with its exterior.  Choosing the right wax applicator can help to prolong the look and feel of the car’s exterior and will mean protecting it as well.  If you use the wrong applicator, the wax can be uneven and streaky, and you can even damage your car’s finish.  So how do you know which wax applicator will work for you and for your car?  Consider a few quick points from the pros.

Different Types of Wax Applicator

A wax applicator for your car will be available in a variety of shapes, sizes, and materials.  They can be microfiber, foam, terry cloth, or a cloth weave.  Each has a different feeling and a different use.  One of the main differences in the types of materials will be the types of polish you use with them.  Liquid wax is more easily absorbed than solid wax.  A wax applicator with a cloth weave may very well absorb a liquid wax rather than have it rubbed onto the car.  For liquid waxes, you want to use cloths with a tight weave or microfibers.

The best way to tell which type of wax applicator you should use is to read the instructions on the wax itself.  It should give you a recommendation for the type of applicator that will work best for the product.  If it recommends microfiber, be sure to use that rather than terry cloth.

Buffing vs. Waxing

Another thing to remember about a wax applicator is that there is a difference between buffing and waxing.  When you use a buffing cloth you are not typically applying any wax to the car.  This is the cloth you use to simply rub away dirt and residue so that the car’s finish shines through.  A buffing cloth is different than a wax applicator because it is not meant to come into contact with liquid or solid wax the way an applicator would.

Many amateurs make the mistake of using the same buffing cloth when it’s time to wax their car.  This means a streaky finish and also means the wax being absorbed into the cloth.  It’s always best to use an actual wax applicator when applying wax of any kind so that you do a proper job.

You also don’t want to use cleansing cloths, or mix the use of a wax applicator with any other cleaning work.  Never try to shine the tires and the car’s exterior with the same cloth; this will move dirt from one area to another.  You also don’t want to polish the dashboard and the interior of the car with your wax applicator as the wax is probably not meant to be used in this way.

If you keep these points in mind you will be able to find the right wax applicator for your car and keep its exterior looking fresh and new.
