Don’t Ruin Your Car’s Finish With the Wrong Wax Applicators!

If you’re at all concerned about the appearance of your car, of course you want to use the right wax applicators.  The wrong applicator will mean an uneven finish, wax buildup, scratches, or having more wax on the applicator than on your car.  All of this means a waste of time and of money, and may also mean having to take your car to a body shop to repair scratches left by a bad applicator.  So how do you choose the right wax applicators for your car?

First, keep in mind that there is a difference between wax applicators and buffers.  A buffer is meant to pull up the surface dirt and grime from a car’s exterior so that it looks shinier.  However a buffer is not meant to be used to apply wax.  Often a buffer is made of very soft, absorbent cloth.  This means it will absorb more liquid wax than it will leave on the car’s exterior, and will not properly adhere solid product to the car’s surface.  When applying wax to a car’s exterior, always use wax applicators and nothing else.  Don’t mistake buffers for applicators!

This also means you shouldn’t be using a washcloth or other rag instead of wax applicators.  Very often washcloths and rags you have in the house are somewhat abrasive and may leave scratches on your car’s finish.  This is especially true if the car is even slightly dirty, as they will push the dirt into the exterior and cause scratches.  They may also leave marks in the wax and do not make for a good shining cloth.  Some are also very absorbent and will wind up soaking up liquid wax rather than leaving a coat of it on the car.

When it comes to wax applicators, the best way you can make a good decision for your car is to read the instructions on the product of your choice.  Liquid waxes are usually put on with a cloth with a tighter weave and solid products use those with a looser weave.  If you try to apply a liquid wax using wax applicators with a loose weave to the material, it will just absorb it like that washcloth.

Typically foam wax applicators are best for just about any type of product you use.  They are also usually hand washable, meaning you can rinse them out and use them over and over again.  Some applicators will keep a buildup of wax and will need to be replaced over time.  With foam, a good rinse to get out the product will mean they can be used almost indefinitely.

Terrycloth is also a favorite material for wax applicators.  This cloth isn’t as absorbent as others and can help to spread solid wax evenly.  It too leaves a nice shine and even finish.  These are favorite choices for many, but of course if your product says to use a different material then you should always follow the instructions on the package.
