Cystitis Symptoms & How To Avoid Them

Cystitis is an inflammation of the bladder caused by irritation or infection.

Commonly known as a lower urinary tract infection (UTI), it commonly affects only the bladder, however, if left untreated, the infection could escalate resulting in an upper urinary tract infection in the ureters or kidneys, which can be much more serious and can result in much more serious cystitis symptoms.

Approximately four out of five women will experience cystitis at least once in a lifetime. Whilst it is less common, children and men may also experience cystitis. However, as it is less common, men or children should speak to a GP if they are experiencing cystitis symptoms.

How to prevent it

Approximately 4 out of 5 women will suffer from cystitis at some point in their life. However others may suffer recurring bouts. If this is the case, you may want to consider the following factors, which may be the cause of cystitis for you.

Hygiene

Poor toilet hygiene, such as wiping from back to front could lead to cystitis.

In some cases, women also overcompensate and wash their genitals too often, causing more harm than good.

Over-cleaning ‘down there’ may alter the normal balance of protective mucus, which may allow bacteria to thrive. Washing gently, once a day is sufficient.

Drink

To flush out your bladder frequently drink plentyof water; or in the least, avoid caffeine and fizzy drinks. Healthy, hydrated urine is the colour of straw, anything darker means you need to drink more fluids.

Underwear

Wear cotton underwear and change it daily, also avoid tight-fitting trousers and tights. Warm, moist, airless conditions, specifically those around your genitals, are a breeding ground for bad bacteria.

Cystitis Symptoms

The most commonly experienced symptoms may include:

  • Burning or stinging sensations when you pass urine
  • A frequent urge to urinate
  • Feeling that you can’t fully empty your bladder
  • The more severe symptoms of cystitis are:

  • Blood in urine
  • Abdominal pain or backache.
  • Fever, temperature and weakness
  • If you are suffering severe symptoms or are suffering cystitis recurrently, please see your GP for advice.
