The Advantages of Using Pond Nets and other Heron Deterrents
Putting up a fishpond takes a lot work and input. The effort involved in creating a fishpond and stocking it with the plants and fish that you want it is an enormous challenge. Once you have achieved your dream fish pond, the next big challenge is keeping your fish safe from pets and other invaders. It is important to protect your vulnerable fish from harm. This is where pond nets and heron deterrent come in handy. There are several solutions on the market that will claim to keep your fish safe from predators, and we’re taking a look at the ones that are considered most effective by the experienced water gardener.
When opting for netting, it is important to get one that is a good size and that can cover the whole fish pond area. Nets prevent the birds from inserting their beaks into the water to try to catch your fish. The netting can be hooked at a certain level above the pool. When purchasing one, ensure you have the exact measurement of the area to match the right mesh size. This is a simple yet effective method of protecting fish from predators such as neighbourhood cats and visiting wildlife. The supplier may be able to provide someone to assist with placing the mesh as required. However, this is not necessary as it is a simple job to do yourself.
Some other available methods of preventing theses birds from causing harm to the fish include purchasing another bird. I’m not talking about a real one here, I’m thinking along the lines of an artificial, ornamental heron that should make the real ones that fly overhead think that your pond has already been chosen and occupied by one of these birds. This may however attract those birds that are seeking a mate. To be on the safe side, buy two birds so that the rest do not come ‘visiting’.
Other methods include purchasing artificial wobbling meerkats and placing them near the pond. The birds fear these cats and will not go near your precious fish, furthermore, they cannot tell the difference between a false meerkat and a real one. You could also buy an alligator head and put it near the bushes around the pool. Again it goes without saying that this should be an artificial alligator head! These also come with electric eyes that light up when it is dark. The birds will too scared of the ‘alligator’ to get anywhere near your fish.
Alarms also work well in protecting fish. These can be installed near the pond and will detect any movement from animals like cats, birds and even children. This comes with the added advantage that it will help protect little children who may play near the water. The alarm sounds, scaring the intruder away and catching the owner’s attention.
Pond nets and other heron deterrent methods work well in protecting expensive ornamental fish from harm. Although using one method could be adequate, a combination of two deterrents would give added protection to your pond. The mesh is however very effective on its own and does not necessarily require any other back-up method.
