Toyota Etios Review
The Toyota Etios is car made only for India and is available in the Indian auto market since 2010. The four door sedan and hatchback cars are a huge hit from the house of the Japanese automobile manufacturer Toyota. The name of the car originates from the Greek word “Ethos”, which means spirit, character, and ideas. The sedan version of the car was launched in December 2010 and the Liva hatchback was launched in June 2011.
From the year 2011, the car has raked up sales of over 30,000 units in India. The car first made its debut in the 2010 Auto Expo in Delhi as a ‘concept car’. The car started to realize it actual commercial production in late 2010. The sedan version of the car that was launched in December 2010 competes with the Maruti Suzuki Swift DZire, Hyundai Accent, Tata Indigo Manza, Mahindra Verito, Chevrolet Aveo and Ford Fiesta. The car comes in trim levels of J, G, G+, V and VX.The engines and the transmissions technology are imported from Japan. The Etios Liva is the hatchback avatar of the Etios that saw the light of the day in June 2011. This model locks horns with the likes of Suzuki Swift, Suzuki Ritz, Hyundai i10, Hyundai i20, Tata Indica, Chevrolet Aveo UV-A, Honda Jazz, Fiat Grande Punto, Skoda Fabia, Ford Figo, Volkswagen Polo, Nissan Micra and even the new entrant Honda Brio.
Both the cars are equipped with features like immobilizer and Door Ajar Warning for all the variants, Dual SRS Airbags and ABS, EBD only on the G+, V and VX trims. The Etios and Etios Liva however are not Euro NCAP and U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration compliant.There have been some consumer complaints with few of them complaining of high NVH levels and the lack refinement compared to the other cars in the compact and mini variants available in the market. The car also has the blame of poor build quality. The car rattles heavily due to its poor encompassment which is actually to keep the costs down. On the feature side also the Etios has very low levels of features and equipment compared to other cars in its class. On the whole the car is not up to the mark in terms of absolute quality and refinement compared to its other rivals.
The car has a 2NR-FE, Gasoline, 4 Cylinder 16V, DOHC engine with a displacement of 1496 cc. It delivers a maximum power of 90PS (66kW) @ 5600 rpm. The max torque of the car is 132 Nm (13.46 kg-m) @ 3000 rpm with Electronic Fuel Injection for the fuel supply system. Overall the entire car measures 4265 mm in length, 1695 mm in width and has a height of 1510 mm. The wheelbase of the car is 2550mm with a ground clearance of 170mm. The car has a fuel tank capacity of 45 litres with a turning radius of 4.9m. The boot space of the car measures 595 litres. The tyre size of the car is 175 / 65 R14 and 185 / 60 R15 for the front and rear. The kerb weight of the car is 900 Kg for the J version, 915 kg for G variant and 930 kg for the V and VX models.
