Naomi Campbell graces Art Basel with her presence (and her Louis Vuitton)

For some reason, looking at paparazzi pictures of Naomi Campbell makes me a tad nervous. First and foremost, she’s intimidatingly beautiful, particularly for what the modeling industry would consider far past her prime. It looks to  cheap chanel evening bags me like Naomi has years of prime to go. Second, I always feel vaguely nervous that she’s going to come to life and beat me with her cell phone through her computer screen because I dared to make eye contact.

Anyway, here she is at Miami’s just-started Art Basel festival, where she’s looking excellent in just jeans and a leopard print blouse, Louis Vuitton Lockit from Fall 2011 slung over her arm. It’s kind of an “everyday” outfit for a supermodel, but Naomi is one of those women who’s striking enough to make you take notice no matter her ensemble. “Striking” in both the literal and figurative senses, that is.
It’s not that I don’t like fall and winter. In reality, I love them. Far more than I love summer! But the grass is always greener on the other side, as they say, and that means that Nicky Hilton and her perfectly summer-chic outfit look mighty good to this New York City-dweller in early December. What I wouldn’t give to be  wearing flip flops right now!

As soon as the flip flop weather arrived, I’m sure I’d be begging for my boots again, but it’s nice to dream of cutoffs and a gauzy button-down now that we’re getting close to legitimate coat weather. One aspect of warm weather that I wouldn’t regret wishing for, though, is the ability to carry breezy light-colored bags like Nicky’s Balenciaga City Bag. Although winter white is great, bags generally look more cold weather-appropriate in structured shapes, whereas a slouchy ivory Balenciaga should be reserved for warmer weather. Can you blame me for dreaming of spring?
Right off the bat, there are two obvious possibilities for a multicolored sequin bag the likes of which Jessica Simpson is carrying in these photos: Dolce & Gabbana or Miu Miu. I couldn’t find an clear match in either of the brand’s current collections, so that means that either I didn’t look hard enough, or it’s a different designer entirely. If it is a third party, I’d guess that’s it’s someone else very name-y – Jessica doesn’t wear anything but the most fabulous and expensive handbags as of late. That shoe line of hers has certainly done her wallet well…

But whoever makes it, let’s talk about the utility of a sequined bag, shall we? Something this big covered in paillettes isn’t exactly my favorite look, but judging by the weather in New York yesterday, a bag like this one does make a certain sort of sense. Even if this bag is leather underneath, the thick layer of metal or plastic  chanel hand bag that the sequins creates would largely protect the bag’s structure from moisture in any but the most unrelenting downpour. Not a bad way to stay both glamourous and dry, when you think of it that way. Anyone know who makes this one?
