Learning to Drive: Getting You P1 Licence

Congratulations on getting your Learner’s Permit. The next step is to develop your driving skills and knowledge so that you can graduate to a Provisional (P1) Licence.

Now that you got your LP, that means you are now permitted to learn driving. However, you need to drive following the strict L-rules. If you do not abide these rules you will get demerit points or lose your permit and be disqualified in getting a P1.

Under your training, you will need to complete at least 75 hours of supervised driving with at least 15 hours of driving at night and in these following conditions:

  • Light – day, night, dawn and dusk
  • Weather conditions – foggy and raining
  • Types of roads – gravel roads and the highways
  • Traffic conditions – heavy and light

Because you need to pass all of these conditions, you will need a professional driving instructor to help you complete the P1 driving requirements. This is where Allan Miller Driving School perfectly fits in the picture.

Actually, there are two ways to get your P1. That is  through CBT (Competency Based Training) or VORT (Vehicle On Road Test).  The method you use is up to you but  Allan Miller Driving School can also offer advice as to the best possible course for you.

CBT (Competency Based Training – sometimes referred to as Log Book)

While you can practice with your supervising driver, your parents perhaps, you need to complete specific tasks with your Driving Companion  signed off by an Accredited Motor Driving Instructor.

Allan Miller can give you an Accredited Motor Driving Instructor to complete your tasks and sign off your CBT units. These instructors are also able to issue a Certificate of Competency. Driving lessons will lasts from 50 or 90 minutes long and the number of lessons required will vary depending on individual ability and the practice you can have outside of your lessons.

VORT (Vehicle On Road Test)

Taking your practical driving test is a technical exercise and the expectations of the test are specific. It is therefore important to know the testing criteria before your VORT. Before you take your test Allan Miller  recommends that you spend time in a car with one of their  instructors to go over the test process.

Your driving instructor will assist you to learn the skills and information which could be tested and point out the common areas that may cause students, like you  to fail. They will also inform you if they think you are ready to take the test as well as point out the areas where you need more practising. Remember, there is a big  difference between being ready to take the test, being ready to have a licence and being ready to drive.

Because driving is a technical skill which requires specific knowledge, you must learn to demonstrate a good understanding of the current driving rules and be able to give your instructor or examiner a actual demonstration of your driving skills. And that is what Allan Miller is all about, teaching you drive like a pro.
