Bangkok: A Heady Oriental Cocktail
Bangkok, the capital city of Thailand has been known to attract hordes of tourists for its swashbuckling night life and a sense of freedom and “let go” which envelops you instantaneously when you set foot in Bangkok. The problem is that when some cities get branded for a few things, a lot of other small yet equally relevant things are not talked about and this is the precise purpose of this write up. While you are readying yourself to grab that seat on one of the many flights to Bangkok, make sure that there is some semblance in your travel itinerary for Bangkok.
Bangkok is known, amongst locals and historical observers to have a huge religious aura around itself. In fact it is true for the whole country and not just Bangkok but it being the capital city, we have to focus our attention around it. Bangkok’s prime religious outpour is in the form of Buddhist temples and Ayutthaya is the biggest example of the temple culture which has contoured Bangkok since years. It is home to many famous temples in Bangkok such as the Wihan Phra Mongkhon Bophit which hosts one of the tallest statues of Buddha and the What Phra Si Samphet inside the hallowed premises of the the Grand Palace, which command a reputation of being the most visited temple of Bangkok, possibly even Thailand.
Bangkok also has another huge symbiotic which remains etched in the minds of the tourist once he visits them; floating markets. These markets ply on canals and river outlets and sell all kinds of merchandize you can think of: Apparels, Fruits, Vegetables, Mutton etc. The major floating markets of Bangkok are Damnoen Sadak (not exactly in Bangkok; it is 40 Kms off it, but the ride is worth it) and Bang Khu Wiang (All others have become tourist nightmares with crowds swelling by every minute and making your visit a harrowing experience). Floating markets should be seen to understand the Thai DNA and how locals interact over flowing waters. It is truly a memorable experience to visit one of these floating markets.
Other attractions like the fragrance rich Rose Garden (it is also an exhibition cum cultural entourage supporting place where you have different activities showcasing the Thai culture), the Nakhon Pathom (one of the first towns in Thai history; visit it for the legacy and history surrounding Thailand) and the Bangkok Zoo make it a truly splendid affair. Bangkok has many such small gems which sadly do not catch the roving eye of the tourist because he has other fanciful things on his agenda. So the next time you are onboard one of the many cheap flights to Bangkok, please make sure that the above mentioned places make it to your itinerary.
