Doll Furniture and Childhood Creativity

It used to be that when you sent your child to school, you could be reasonably confident that they were going to do something that would encourage them to be creative and to express themselves. This was done naturally during recess, and was encouraged by music, art, and writing programs. Those days are coming to an end.

The problem that schools are running into is that they aren’t making as much money as they once did. In order to keep the lights on and to continue to educate your kids, schools are looking at their programs and starting to slice and dice things from their budget. One of the very first things to usually feel the sharp bite of the axe are the arts programs. With the way things look right now, there is a really good chance that children who are starting kindergarten might not experience the arts at all while they are in school.

The ever-decreasing arts programs in schools means that it is becoming more important than ever for parents to do everything that they can to encourage their children to be creative while they are at home. This means instead of letting them sit in front of the television all day long, parent’s should urge their child to play or to read.

Even though you want your child to use their imagination when it comes to playing, being creative can be a lot easier when your child has few props on hand. That is where things like dolls and doll furniture comes into play. The doll furniture provides your child with the stepping stones they need to really let their imagination rip.

Just because you have gotten your daughter some doll furniture for her birthday or Christmas, it doesn’t mean that you should insist that she only use it for certain types of play. When you give your daughter the furniture, you want to encourage her to do whatever she wants with it. This is why you want to make sure that the doll furniture you’ve bought is well constructed and durable enough to with stand her dragging it all over your house and even into the backyard.

Keep an eye on your child and see if there is a particular item of doll furniture that they seem to be particularly enamored with. If so, the next time you are looking for something that they can play with, you might want to think about getting them something similar. For example, if they like to pile their dolls in strollers and take them for walks, you might want to consider a parasol that can be attached. If they like to set their dolls in chairs, the next step might be to invest in a table.

As a parent you have a responsibility to encourage your child’s imagination. When they invite you to play with them, you should take them up on their offer. While playing listen to the stories that they are telling, and try to participate without actually interfering.
