Samsung electronics, history, consumer electronics successes
The second largest South Korean conglomerate in the world, the Samsung Group is headquartered in Seoul, South Korea. The group has had, and continues to have, a tremendous influence on many aspects of South Korea like its development, economy, politics and culture. The Samsung Group comprises several subsidiaries and businesses, all of which operate using the Samsung name. Samsung Electronics is one of the groups most prominent subsidiaries.
Samsung Electronics was born in 1969 as Samsung Electric Industries. By 1990, it was one of the largest companies in South Korea. However, today, the company is a powerful force that influences and shapes South Korea.
GREATEST ACHIEVEMENT
One of the crowning achievements of this Samsung subsidiary was in 2006 when it surpassed Sony as the worlds leading player in the television market segment. Since then, Samsung continues to dominate the television segment and has maintained its numero uno position in terms of units sold. However, it was not always sunny and shiny for Samsung Electronics. Before 2006, the company trailed Sony, which was the then undisputed king. Samsungs turnaround has been nothing short of remarkable. Samsung has pushed the boundaries of LCD technology by focusing its attention on light-emitting diode (LED). However, it has not focused much on other display technologies like organic light-emitting diode (OLED).
RULING THE FLAT-PANEL TELEVISION SEGMENT
According to a market research company, nearly one in five televisions purchased in the third quarter of 2009 was a Samsung product. One of the things which went Samsungs way was the acceptance of flat-panel technology by the consumers. Going by data, Samsung plans to make the most of this. Out of 38 million televisions shipped in 2009, a staggering 31 million were flat-panel televisions! According to a company executive, the company plans to increase that figure.
Based on sales data of 2011, the company is the leader in the plasma television market. It is no surprise, considering the number of features Samsung has added to their plasma television models. With wireless connectivity to built-in media players, the company is giving customers exactly what they are asking for a media hub, minus the cables and excessive peripherals!
LEADER IN THE 3D TELEVISION MARKET
Even in the 3D TV market, Samsung Electronics has done outstandingly well. In the US 3D TV segment alone, the company holds 60% market share. Although the 3D TV market does not shine as brightly as the HDTV market, Samsung Electronics has helped the cause of the 3D TV segment by building hype around their 3D TV products. They provide two pairs of 3D glasses for each purchase of a LED or plasma television set. They have also reduced the price of their 3D glasses, when purchased individually.
