How to Keep Your Valuables Secure in your Home

One of the pleasures of life, for many people, is the ability to own nice things. You work hard to be able to afford valuables that enhance your life and that of your family. However, these valuable items are also a prime target for theft. As part of a full home security system, you need to implement procedures that protect your belongings from burglars. Of course, you and your family members are the first priority when it comes to home security, but taking steps to secure your belongings can keep you from becoming a target in the first place.

To begin with, there are certain valuables that you use on a daily basis and are kept out on display. These include HD televisions, stereo equipment, video game equipment and artwork. These items would have little value to you if you weren’t using them regularly, so they are going to be out where burglars can possibly see them. For this reason, you need to make sure that passersby cannot see into your windows where they can essentially “shop” for your items. Keep your drapes closed and try to choose a room that does not face the street for your living area. In addition, whenever you purchase a new item, do not simply put the boxes out on your curb for everyone to see. Use a box cutter to break down the boxes and put them in black garbage bags.

For valuables that do not need to be used every day, a safe is the most common tool for keeping them safe. There are many different safes on the market, but you will want to get one that has a lock that requires a combination to unlock and is fireproof. If you keep important documents in your safe, you want them protected from fire as well as from theft. Keep in mind, though, that if the safe is not heavy enough, some criminals will simply pick the whole thing up, take it with them and open it later. It is always recommended that you bolt the safe to the floor if you are able to pick it up.

The safes that do not lock but rely on blending into the surroundings to keep your valuables safe are not recommended. Even though some criminals will overlook these safes, others are trained to look for them and will have easy access to your valuables. Always choose a locking safe over one that doesn’t lock to protect your belongings.

When you are installing your home security system be sure your family is safe, then turn your attention to your valuables. Keep yourself from becoming an easy target by keeping them either out of sight or locked up.
