Sierra Wireless AirCard 881 Review
The Sierra Wireless AirCard-881 is a one piece device that easily fits into any laptop’s PC card slot. It is equipped with a set of small unobtrusive LED lights, which are provided on the top of the card. They show which mode it is in-2G (slow) or 3G (fast). It courageously leads the way in high speed PC card providing. It has the right price, the right speeds and the features to be an indescribable asset to any business traveler.
The Sierra Wireless AirCard-881 also provides international roaming, but one would be best advised to get an international data plan. The cost is based on MB per month with a simple charge for overage usage. The international data plan includes Mexico and Canada, as well as many European and Asian countries. For both foreign and domestic overages, the charge is $5 per MB.
Other features include: being able to both send and receive emails with large attachments, average download speeds of 600 Kbps to 1.4 Mbps, and average upload speeds of 500 to 800 kbps. If the laptop is not in high speed range, the card will drop to the slower EDGE network. It is also compatible with Mac notebooks, although most of them are not equipped with card slots anymore.
Pros
-Supports both windows XP and Vista
-First card to support HSUPA
-Fast uploads and downloads
Cons
-Requires an AT&T data plan
-International roaming is very costly
-Reception can be tricky
Overall rating
Even considering that cons, the few that there are, the Sierra Wireless AirCard-881 is a must have for any PC card enthusiast. This is the best choice for high-speed Internet use on AT&T’s network. While a data plan is required, it is very worth every cent spent as the Sierra Wireless AirCard-881 provides fast downloads and speedy uploads on both foreign and domestic networks. In addition to this, as new technologies continue to get better and better nearly every day, the Sierra Wireless AirCard-881 is bound to only get faster and faster accordingly. This is a must-have for any laptop traveler; two thumbs WAY up!
