Exercise and the Male Mind
It builds muscle, fights fat, and makes you heart healthy leaving you feeling happy at the end. If it were a new miracle drug we would all jump on that bandwagon!! Exercise has all these benefits and more, but as we age very few of us still make time for a workout. There are lots of easy and quick workout routines for men and women that do not require a lot of time, and would allow you to reap huge health benefits.
But why do some people relax, veg out on the couch and flip to the next sports channel, while they could be out on the field enjoying the game and what motivates others to get up and exercise. Many sports trainers have felt that men and women are motivated differently to exercise. They believe that men are more goal oriented and workout routines for men need to be focused to achieve some end result. Usually in men this result is to build up muscle bulk by a fixed number of inches, or to lose fat by a fixed number of inches. They are not interested in the social aspects of exercise and don’t like group classes and sessions like Yoga or Pilates which may actually help them improve their balance, co-ordination and do wonders for their stress levels.
Thus popular workout routines for men include lifting a lot of weight with a good amount of cardio. Men are looking to get the maximum punch from their time spent exercising. They want to look like they workout, they don’t want to take things slow and they do want to see results quick. Women on the other hand are more social about their workouts, usually they do not want to look like they workout, they do not want to become bulky and muscular and enjoy the social interaction of a group activity. They thus lose out on the benefits of being more focused on an end result.
Ultimately both genders seem to miss out on the most important reason to exercise, the health benefits. The best workout routines for men are ones that focus on their health needs, building a strong heart and bones, lowering cholesterol, blood pressure and triglyceride levels, and not ones focused on externals like building muscle mass. It is time that both genders learnt to borrow from each other and mix and match for a perfect workout.
