Towards an HIV Cure

Medical scientist and researchers have been over the mountains and through the valleys in an effort to find a HIV cure. As with everything in life, if it’s worth having, then it’s worth working for. One the many obstacles that have been faced by these medical professionals if that if they are able to cure an individual that has been infected with HIV, they will not be able to accurate say if the persons has been completely cured of the infection. Therefore it may or may not reoccurrence.

What we have been taught by the Berlin Patient is that HIV cure that is functional can be obtained that is similar to the one that cured the Berlin Patient of his HIV, then it will be off little significance if a small amount of the infection was to remain in the individuals body. This is because the remaining amount will not be detected by the technology that is currently being used. The decision to stop administering ART (antiretroviral therapy), will on if you have truly been cured of the infection. Bear in mind that if have chosen to discontinue taking your antiretroviral therapy before the HIV has been completely eradicated, it will present itself again later in the future.

However in order to effective try and find a cure for HIV, we have to see an increase in financial support. In the years 2009, the U.S government utilized three percent of its one point five billion dollars of the budget for HIV/AIDS research in order to find a cure. That amounts to forty-five million dollars and in my opinion that is a trivial amount. HIV/AIDS supporters of the cure research have estimated that funding for researching should be approximately two-hundred million dollars. As a direct result of this, other organizations have become involved by offering well needed grants but it is still not enough.

The antiretroviral therapy that is considered to be the most basic costs at minimum twenty thousand dollars per years and this is an expense that cannot be afforded by most people living in developed countries; therefore you can imagine how devastating it must be for people living in poorer countries. A stem cell transplant treatment such as the one that was use to cure the Berlin patient may cost well over two hundred thousand dollars. But as improvements are made in technology, these therapies will inevitably get cheaper, but that may not happen for years to come. This is why these medical professionals are acidulously working to crack the case and why it is important for them to be equipped with the funding that is needed.
