What do Emergency Vehicles stand to gain by using Visor Lights?

Visor lights are very useful for emergency vehicles such as ambulance, fire trucks and cop cars that have an important role to play in protecting lives of people. These lights are now designed using LED bulbs which are energy efficient and reliable.

Visor lights are extremely popular fixtures of unmarked vehicles which are on stealth operations and need a secondary line of warning. These lights are called so because of their mounting position adjacent or behind the visor. They offer a powerful warning signal without really obstructing the view for the driver. However, their benefit really lies in their compactness and small dimensions as a result of which their installation can be cleverly concealed in tight space or intersection angles. Vehicles which are on covert missions will appreciate the fact that these lights can sparsely be perceived, especially when the lights are not turned on.

The Visor lights use clear, polycarbonate lenses for two reasons. Firstly, the single slide in lenses or double Fresnel lenses, are clear and hence virtually undetectable when the lights are not on. Secondly, the lenses ensure that in spite of the small size, the warning beam emanating from the visor light equipment is wide enough and travels far enough to alert those waiting for it. Thus, it is a compact, efficient unit which can be of great help during emergencies when there is need for a flashing signal that catches the eye of everyone around. Interestingly, these lights sometimes come with a black polycarbonate hood like most other interior emergency lighting units, to prevent flashback effect on the driver inside the vehicle. This flashback shield can however be removed if not required.

The Visor lights can be easily mounted with the help of Velcro straps. This is possible because of their low weight which is usually less than 5lbs. Temporary mounting with magnets can also be a good option. These lights can also be mounted using suction cups. Slim visor emergency lights comprise of couple of LED segments or modules, each with its own set of colored LEDs. A combination of blue and red LEDs is the most common sight. The 9 or 12-LED segments offer super bright light beams, whose effects are further enhanced by optic spreading filters which may be clear or colored. Green, amber and white are other preferred colors when it comes to warning flashes.

Efficiently designed Visor lights can be easily repaired or upgraded by simply removing a few screws. Without any need for a flasher device, these emergency lighting units have 6 – 8 built in flash patterns and sometimes a pattern override feature as well. Lights with split color sections are especially effective because of the multicolored flashing that they are capable of generating. Undercover LED inserts are used for wide angle beams which are reliable and penetrative in the most adverse of conditions. The lighting kit sometimes has spare lenses in different colors. O-ring seal is sometimes provided with the kit for waterproofing the equipment. 1 inch holes are usually sufficient for these lights, although with suction cup mounting or straps, drilling holes could be completely avoided. Extreme angle beams are also produced by these lights with the help of tactically placed deflectors and mirrors that enhance the powerful beams from the ultra bright LEDs.
