Also known as kiteboarding, kite-surfing is an adventure water sport that combines windsurfing, paragliding, surfing, gymnastics and wakeboarding into one extreme sport. It uses wind power to propel the rider across water on a kite-board or surfboard which is similar to wakeboard in shape and size. There are several different kite-boarding styles, such as freestyle, speed, downwinders, wave-riding, jumping, wakestyle, course racing and freeride. To get started with kite surfing, you will need basic equipment, such as kite, a board, harness and control bar.
When choosing the board, you will need to consider your body weight, the wind speed at kitesurfing location and your skill level. For beginners who are seeking to sharpen their kitesurfing skills, a wide and long board would be the right choice. The larger board allows the rider to use smaller kite and will stay afloat if he/she makes any mistake or loses kite power. Advanced kitesurfers can use smaller board which will allow them to use more kite power to jump to great heights and perform tricks. If you are a beginner, it will be better to ask professionals to help you on controlling, launching and landing. When selecting a kite, you need to take into account various factors such as, how easily can the kite be re-launched from water, and how well can you jump and sail upwind.
There are two types of kitesurfing kites: foil kites and leading-edge inflatable kites. A leading edge inflatable kite is good for beginners as it is stable and easier to fly. It can stay afloat on the water for long periods of time and can be re-launched because it does not have any chamber that can fill with water. Foil kites are made from ripstop nylon and come with air pockets that give it an arch shape and provide the lift.
