What is Ratio

Hello Friends, in today’s session we are going to learn about Ratios.

What is Ratio?

A ratio is defined as a relationship between two numbers which are of same kind. A ratio in general is defined as ‘a/b’ or a: b or it is also said as ‘a’ to ‘b’. Here in this a and b are called as terms. Like for example we take 1: 5, then we could say it as the second number is five times large as the first.

Like for example if we have to express the 16 ducks and 9 geese that are there in the park in the ratio form, then it could be done as

16: 9, 16/9 or 16 to 9. This is the ratio of ducks to geese.

Now with the same numbers we have to express geese to ducks ratio, then it can be written as

9:16, 9/16 or 9 to 16.

We can see that the numbers used in both the cases are same but their representation is different.

While writing ratios we should keep one thing in mind that the ratios used do not represent the absolute measured values. The ratio of 15:20 could also be written as 3:4, so the ratio could also be simplified.

The ratios are simple relationships and reasoning that we use to solve the word problems.

1. The ratio of passing grades to failing grades is 7 to 5. How many of the 36 students failed the course.

The ratio could be represented as 7 to 5, 7:5 or 7/5. So this means that total out of (7 + 5) = 12 students 5 failed. So out of 36 would be (5/12) * 36 = 15.

So this means that out of 36 students 15 got failed.

2. Express the ratio $10 to $45 in simplest form?

The fraction could be represented as 10/45, 10:45 or 10 to 45. In the simplest form 10/45 could be 2/9. So in its simplest form it could be written as 2 to 9.

3. Express 240 miles to 8 gallons in simplest form.

The fraction in its simplest form could be represented as 240/8, 240:8 or 240 to 8. So in its simplest form would be 30/1, 30:1 or 30 to 1.

So this is all we have for today. And I hope that you will be able to solve simple problems based on ratios.
