Is Free Web Hosting Worth it?

Many website owners and webmasters look at free web hosting as an alternative to paying yearly fees and usually come up short. Typically the companies offering free hosting accounts lack in the customer service department or they are lacking in other important areas.

When someone needs a site hosted, it is generally because the business is selling a product or business in which case the benefits and features available to the client should be addressed to be sure it meets the needs of the client. For example, most clients need domain name registration, templates to build a website, email access, Adwords credits, FTP access MySQL access and more. However, not every free account offers all the needed features to build a site.

Some hosters such as Webs, formerly known as FreeWebs, offer all the necessities of a hosting account and include free templates, in addition to tutorials on how to use the site and hosting. These types of hosters offers numerous features including compatibility with CSS and also offer FTP access, in addition to allowing the webmaster to upload his own code in place of a template.

These types of accounts generally work as blogs do, uploading media to file folders to create a media library and inserting them into the content, as they would use a WordPress account. Additionally, clients can choose from a variety of layouts, or create their own as well.

Domain name registration is available for a fee; however, free registration and use is available so long as the client keeps in mind that the URL will end in the domain of the hosting company. For example, a website URL of a company named “webhosting” would become “webhosting.webs.com.” While this is ony one drawback of using a free account, it certainly beats having to pay hundreds of dollars every year for other types of hosting. A free web hosting account has its benefits and offers many of the same features a paid for account does, but without the hassle.
