Why HID Lights Should Be Preferred Over Halogen Bulbs for Car Headlights
HID lights are becoming very popular these days because of their brighter light and durability when compared to conventional halogen lamps.
High Intensity Discharge (HID) bulbs are increasingly being preferred over conventional halogen lamps, which have been used in headlights of the vehicles since a long time. More and more people are turning towards HID light bulbs because they emit much brighter light and cover more area when compared to conventional halogen lamps. Many people are not aware that HID lights are available in various versions including the regular high pressure sodium lights, metal halide lamps, and mercury vapor lamps.
HID lamps were introduced into the market in the form of mercury vapor lamps. They underwent a lot of changes over the next few years and today much better lamps are available in the market such as high pressure sodium lamps and metal halide lamps. These improvements have significantly increased the average lifespan of these bulbs and have made them highly durable and weatherproof.
For producing light, the gas present inside the tube is heated up to the point of evaporation. The tube starts emitting light when evaporation point is reached inside the tube. The tube also contains tungsten electrodes, which begin to heat up and light is produced. These lights are similar to fluorescent lights as they also require ballast for the production of heat inside the tube. These ballasts are important for the production of light in a HID light and such bright light cannot be produced without ballast.
Tungsten is used for making electrodes that are used inside the HID light bulbs because of the high melting point of this metal. Tungsten is also used in many other electrical appliances where high temperatures are involved. The electrodes made from Tungsten are very durable and can withstand high temperatures for longer periods of time. This adds to the overall lifespan of HID lights, making them very durable and sturdy.
The light emitted by the HID headlight bulbs is much brighter when compared to conventional halogen bulbs. The light emitted by these powerful lights is similar to the lightening phenomenon during a storm. Regular halogen bulbs rely on its filament for emitting light and therefore their light is very dull when compared to HID lights. This difference has resulted in the decline in the popularity of the halogen bulbs as brighter light of HID headlamps make them much safer for night driving.
HID Xenon bulbs used in HID kits are almost ten times more durable than the regular halogen bulbs. Filaments used inside halogen lamps can get damaged due to the vibrations sustained by the bulb during the drive whereas HID lamps do not have anything that can break. HID lights emit brighter light than regular halogen lamps but consume lesser electricity, meaning lesser load on the battery of the car. Therefore, HID lights are a much better bet than the regular halogen headlights.
