Cashmere – Fashion’s New Best Friend
Fashions come and fashions go, but some materials are here to stay, with cashmere being a case in point. This most luxurious of natural fabrics feels just as delicious to wear as it looks, and the fashion world has recently embraced cashmere with a new enthusiasm.
Perhaps it is the effects of the global financial downturn – we want items that are luxurious without being frivolous and that look good without looking flashy – but the fashion world today is turning its full attention to a fabric that, while always revered by stylish dressers putting together their winter wardrobes, has never really spent much time in the fashion spotlight.
Luxury cashmere retailers are beginning to sell to customers from across a much wider social spectrum than in previous years, and it has been interesting to note that style conscious men are every bit as interested in cashmere knitwear as their female counterparts.
Cashmere socks, scarves and gloves are proving a huge hit with both men and women, while ladies who can afford to indulge a little are also treating themselves to cashmere dresses and skirts along with the traditional cashmere sweaters.
These sweaters, too, have been given something of a style makeover, with today’s sleek, chic numbers being a far cry from the baby pink and blue cashmere jumpers that were for so long considered the sole preserve of ‘Sloaney’ types that would team them up with a string of pearls.
Cashmere boutiques today sell knitwear that can be worn by the most modern and fashion-forward of women, but the fabric has not lost itself in the world of fashion and become the latest fast forgotten fad. You are unlikely to see a parade of loudly patterned cashmere dresses being paraded down the high street – instead, you are likely to see cashmere gloves and scarves putting in an appearance in the winter wardrobes of your most stylish friends and colleague, or spot an elegant commuter wearing a black cashmere dress with pair of timelessly fashionable black leather winter boots. Cashmere is all about understated style, and is unlikely to ever fall out of fashion.
