No. 1 LSU and No. 2 Alabama will square off in New Orleans in the BCS National Championship Game in arguably the most anticipated rematch in college football history.

Since the BCS’ inception in 1998, LSU has won two national championships. The first came after the 2003 season, the second after the 2007 season. Both of those championships were won in New Orleans, where this game will be played.
Alabama won the national championship following the 2009 season, beating Texas.
LSU Baseball Coach Paul Mainieri is hoping experience in his weekend rotation will result in the Tigers hosting a regional for the first time since the 2009 national championship team. By the end of last season, LSU had three freshmen starting in its weekend rotation, Kevin Gausman, Kurt McCune and Ryan Eades. All three are back and Mainieri will hope for better results out of his bullpen that squandered several late leads.
Remember, 7 of LSU’s 17 conference losses were by one run last season. LSU will have to replace the offensive production and leadership Mikie Mahtook supplied last season. Mainieri will be counting on returning starters Raph Rhymes, Jacoby Jones and Mason Katz.
Once football season rolls around again, there will be talk of another undefeated regular season. LSU will have eight home games, but it’s still a challenging schedule that includes road trips to Auburn, Arkansas and Texas A-and-M. LSU will also host Alabama and South Carolina, who will likely be Top 10 foes.
He may not have been a finalist for the Ray Guy Award, but I don’t think it is a stretch to call Brad Wing the best punter in college football. Wing averaged over 44 yards per punt this season and routinely pinned opponents inside their own 20. As good as the Tigers’ defense has been all year long, one of the reasons for that is Wing putting them in a position to succeed.
In what is sure to be a defensive battle, field position will be of the utmost importance in the title game. This puts Wing at the forefront since he can flip the field in LSU’s favor and force Alabama to start deep inside its own territory. If Wing kicks the way he has all season long, then it will give the Tigers a major advantage that could be invaluable.
