Getting A Nose Stud: Significance, Piercing and Types

NOSE STUDS IN SOCIETY.
Nose piercing is the piercing of the skin or cartilage on the nose. Nostril piercings are the most popular piercing on the nose, which is when the nose stud is seen on the side of the nose, on or near its indentation. Other areas of the nose can be pierced however, including the Septum and the Bridge.

Nostril piercings are the second most common to ear piercing. People have nose piercings for a number of reasons, including viewing them as aesthetically pleasing, a desire to look individual, or for cultural reasons.

In India, the left nostril piercing is common on women for its perceived belief of making childbirth easier, and elaborate nostril jewellery is also often worn for marriage ceremonies. Nose piercings are also viewed as a mark of beauty and respect to Parvati, the Hindu goddess of marriage.

If the piercing is done for non-cultural reasons, it makes less difference whether it is the left or right side which is pierced. In the 80s and 90s in the UK nose studs and other body piercing jewellery became popular amongst punks, as a symbol or unconformity or rebellion.

Many people just appreciate the way the piercing looks and believe it gives them an unique appearance. Although some regard on-show piercings such as nose studs as detrimental to the wearer’s professional appearance, nose studs can be removed for work or job interviews. It is also widely regarded that employers and the public in general are becoming more accustomed to seeing nose studs, and therefore are generally accepting of them.

NOSE PIERCING SAFETY.
If you are considering a nostril piercing, you will want to make sure your procedure is as safe and hygienic as possible. If you have any questions or queries make sure you ask your piercer before you commit to the piercing, and they should give you information on how to look after the piercing during healing.

Do not use a piercer who uses a gun. Be wary if your piercer tries to use an ear piercing gun to pierce your nose, they are too blunt for nose piercing. And if your piercer isn’t using the right equipment, it’s likely that they won’t be carrying out the right hygiene practices either. Make sure they thoroughly wash their hands, wear new gloves, and throw them away after use. The room where you are having your piercing should be spotless. If you have any concerns of the hygiene and safety practices don’t be afraid to leave. Health and safety should come first, particularly when it comes to putting something through your skin.

TYPES OF NOSE STUDS.
Now for the fun part. Having had your piercing and waited for the advised healing time, you will be able to change your nostril jewellery. There are many different materials used for nose jewellery, including steel, titanium, gold, silver, platinum and acrylic. Some materials may suit your skin better than others, and some, such as plated gold or purse silver, are completely advised against for piercings. There are many styles and colours available too, as well as different lengths and gauges (thicknesses).

You can also purchase curved nose studs, which twist into place. Wearers believe them to be more secure than other types of nose studs, and they are often available in “U” or “Half U” measurements. Hooped nose rings are a great alternative to a regular nose stud, providing an even more unique look.
