Increasing number of wars in the world?
The recent research conducted on wars reported that the frequency of wars occurring between the states enhanced consistently from 1870 and 2001 by two percent in a year. The research on this issue has also reported that the wars have come up and increased because of growth of the economies and generation of new borders of nations.
The research studies were conducted by Professor Mark Harrison from the University of Warwick’s center for competitive advantage in the global economy and the Professor Nikolaus Wolf at the University of Humboldt on the wars between the states. The number of wars or conflicts that occurred between the states as per the above researchers have increased from 6 was per year on an average during the period between 1870 and 1913 to 17 per year. This increase in number of wars from 6 per year to 17 per year happened in the period when there were two world wars. The cold wars increased to 31 per year, and 36 per year in the years 1990s.
The Professor Mark Harrison has revealed from his research that the frequency of conflicts was increasing consistently till 1913. But the trend got disturbed between 1914 and 1945. Then after the year 1945 the frequency resumes again the same way as before 1913. The reports released by the University of Warwick says that the countries which were acting as key members in enhancing the wars increased from 47 during the year 1870 to 187 during the year 2001. Harrison goes on to add that the countries were fighting with each other as there were more countries forming. This report indicates that there is a very strong link between the creation of new states and new borders with wars. The research studies which considered the conflicts between the states constitute the full scale shooting wars, usage of military force to display it in sending warships and closing borders.
This study did not evaluate the intensity of fights and violence but has identified the intention of the governments of the countries to settle the matters by force. The growth in productivity, democracy and trading opportunities were considered to have made the wars cheaper.
