Taking care of hair extensions

Your extensions might not be the same as your real hair but it doesn’t mean you can take care of them less. Unlike natural born hair, hair extensions can’t restore themselves once they are damaged. Not only should you acquaint yourself on how to properly wear them but to also reduce further detriments.

Hair extensions are expensive. Proper care will keep them good looking and in good condition for a longer period of time. Maintenance does not require a lot of extra work. Keeping its quality will greatly depend on how you clean your hairpieces regularly.

First, determine the type of your extension.  Are they natural of synthetic? This will identify the kind of care it needs in order to keep it well conditioned and properly groomed. Washing is the most important aspect in making the hair clean.  Clip on extensions must be removed at the end of the day to wash away accumulated dirt and grime.

Loosen tangles with your fingers first and then gently stroke it with a wide-tooth comb to detangle hard knots. The proper way of brushing is to start from the root to the tip. Treat extensions the same way that you would to your natural born hair. Remove excess oil by using a mild shampoo or dry shampoo that you can spray on the roots of your natural hair. Use mild water instead of warm water to rinse all the shampoo and conditioner out of real hair extensions.

Extensions made from synthetic wigs require different care. Shampoos and conditioners may contain ingredients that can easily wash away color. Instead of shampoo use a mild liquid cleanser and wash away residue on your hair using tap water.  Be gentle and make sure not to tangle the hair pieces.

Do not blow dry. Loosely wrap a towel around your hair to absorb excess water. After a few minutes remove the towel and leave your hair hanging loose. Let the air dry your damp hair while you brush the tips of your fingers carefully through the strands.  If the extensions can be removed like in the case of clip in hair extensions, lay them flat on a towel and allow the air to dry it naturally.

Store the extensions when you’re not wearing them.  Lay them flat somewhere so the strands are kept straight. When wearing the hair pieces style your natural hair first and add the clip hair extensions. It is important to remember that you can style your normal hair anyway you want but synthetic extensions cannot withstand extensive heat and styling. The heat will melt them. Too much hairspray, gel, pomade or strong hair products will cause it to twist and dry.  This will relatively reduce its durability and style retention. Once the extensions are in place, blend it with your natural hair to evenly distribute the weight of the strands on your scalp.
