Fake your own antiques
Not everyone can afford to buy genuine antiques for their home. Modern furniture may be cheap and functional, but it doesn’t have the classic look of ageing pieces and certainly doesn’t fit into houses that were built a century ago. If you’re determined to furnish your house in period pieces, you could always spend weeks or months scouring thrift stores in your area for cheap antiques, or you can cheat and use a few tricks to make your brand new, shop-bought furniture look as though it is at least as old as your house.
Luckily, the current trend for modern wooden furniture is for it to be as simple and plain as possible; this will save you some work when it comes to creating your own home-made antiques. If the piece you are trying to age does have a varnish or paint finish, then your first job is to sand this down. Your second job is the most fun part of the process; take a hammer or any other hard, blunt object and start to hit your piece of furniture. This will create the kind of bumps and cracks that a genuine antique would have accumulated over the decades.
Next you have a choice to make when it comes to painting the furniture. The quick option is to paint a couple of very rough coats of primer, to make it look as though the paint has become worn with time. The second option takes more time, but also creates the most authentic-looking antique. Any genuine piece of older furniture will actually have been painted or varnished many times over the years; you can fake this by covering your new piece of furniture in several different coats of different colours.
The most obviously modern part of any modern piece of furniture is the handles, but these are easy to replace – and you can even find some genuine antiques in local stores to do the job. They will look much better than the modern ones your wardrobe or chest of drawers came with and buying handles in an antique store is much cheaper than buying the whole piece.
