What is family therapy?
Family therapy is a therapy that is designed for families to handle with their everyday problems and some large problems if there are such. Basically the family therapy has the goal to take care of any ongoing problems in the family, to remove all of the dysfunctions in the family system and thus family therapy (we Danes call it nyttige parterapi)can effectively improve the relationships in the family. Family therapy can be beneficial in many situations; this form of psychotherapy is suitable for couples, families with children and even gay marriages and unions. In all sorts of situations and all kinds of problems can effectively be solved with the help of the family therapy sessions.
When you opt for family therapy, the most common approach that is used is with sessions that take place outside the home. In these sessions, the whole family should be present. However in some cases the therapist might one to have private talks with only one of the family members. This approach is very effective. Family therapy is effective because often there are problems which are not recognized by the family members themselves, while the professional therapist can recognize them all within the group sessions. Therefore family therapy counseling can provide a lot of positive results for the entire family and their relationship with one another.
One of the greatest things about family therapy , and also family counseling (which is called vellykket familierådgivning in Denmark)is that it offers an opportunity for open conversations. Though talking seems like an easy task, people often have difficulties saying what they feel, especially if they feel threatened. The safe environment which the family therapy sessions offer gives every family member the opportunity to speak freely everything they feel. Basically in the family therapy sessions, everyone can have an open conversation and speak freely about feelings and problems that are going on. This way all of the problems that are caused of the behavior misunderstandings in the family are going to be solved. The open conversation will allow the progress that is made in the sessions to be transferred when the family gets home.
There are mainly three forms of family therapy available. The most common type of family therapy is based on the theory in which the family is treated as one system. In the systematic family therapy approach, the family is treated as one unit rather than separate individuals, this form of family therapy is designed to unite the family and make sure that there are no dysfunctions in the family system. The other two forms of family therapy focus on the psychological dynamics and the behavioral issues present in the family. Family therapy counseling can include approaches from all of these forms in the sessions. Thus the therapy will be most effective and the results that are reached are going to be permanent. Family therapy is a very useful form of psychotherapy which every family can take advantage of.
