Pell grants for single mothers is a great opportunity for single mothers to finish post-secondary education and provide a better future for her children. Being a single mother has its ups and downs and one of the things that might get a single parent down is not being able to provide the needs of her children and not being able to reach one’s dreams of a good life. The Federal scholarship grants can be used in over 5,400 affiliating post secondary institutions all over the United States. Pell grants for single mothers have certain requirements for application. First to qualify for application, one must hold US citizenship and should be at least an undergraduate student, possesses a high school diploma or completed six certified hours of higher education. One must fill out an online application called “Free Application for Federal Student Aid” or FAFSA.
Pell Grants for Single Mothers and Expected Family Contribution
Funding of Pell grants for single mothers will depend on the: Expected Family Contribution or EFC, the cost of attendance which will be determined by the chosen institution and if course taken would be a part-time or full-time education. The Expected Family Contribution or EFC is thoroughly explained on the FAFSA and applicant should fill it up. EFC is the sum of percentage net income which is computed subtracting all the basic expenses either as an independent or a dependent individual and percentage of net assets which is determined after deducting the asset protection allowance. EFC will also depend on the number of dependents of a single mother, total expenses and budget that one spends in the household. If the single mother is dependent then net assets of the parents or guardian will be the basis for the EFC.
After filing of FAFSA, the single mother applicant will then receive a Student Aid Report or SAR that will say if the applicant passed or not. An Institutional Student Information Record or ISIR can be received by the school as well telling if the application has been accepted. The Federal Government provides successful grants to single mothers with annual income of $30,000 or less than the said amount.
If pursued, Pell grants for single mothers is a good way to continue education and a chance for the mother to have better job and be productive in order to provide a good life for their children. These scholarship grants by the government will be limited to only qualified applicants and thorough screening. So if one is qualified, it would be best to take the chance and pursue that academic dream that was ceased because of the struggles of being a single mother.
