What is prayanama
Prayanama is often a neglected Yoga practice in contemporary schools of Yoga, or Prayanama is something hyped up to be a very advanced technique of Yoga that a layman cannot access. (Funny, because every other Yoga student these days does “meditation”!) Well, Prayanama can be both. For starters, suffice to say that Prayanama is the conscious regulation of your breathing.
According to some realized masters, every human being is given a definite number of breaths. If you have to live long and happy, you better use this breath economically. If you think that you are not really wasting your breath, why don’t you look at a sad person and see how shallow and fast he breathes! Same goes for a stressed out or anxious person. The point is, without our realizing it; many of us waste our energies for no reason at all. And in Yoga, this regulation of breath (Prayanama) is all the more important because it is through our breath that we try to not only conserve, but even expand the life force within us (This force is the Prana, the energy which makes life happen). Hatha Yoga also says that this Prana is the subtle thread that connects your body and your mind. That is why, when you practice Prayanama, you are not only gaining physical benefits, but profound mental benefits as well, and you will feel completely energized and rejuvenated.
Specific Prayanama techniques when practiced under supervision have very beneficial effects which can even be measured objectively. Prayanama done on a regular basis can improve your metabolic rate, it can improve your sleep pattern, and it can lower your blood pressure. Prayanama can even relieve you of bloatings and pains and help you regulate your eating pattern.
For all these reasons, it is really about time that we got our breathing right! You don’t have to believe us, but just try and see for yourself how it feels to BREATHE and feel the difference in you after few days of dedicated practice.
