Home Insulation Batts
If you have been in your loft lately then you will likely have encountered home insulation batts even if you weren’t aware of what they were. These are the large squares of fiber glass or other material that are designed to hold heat in your property and they are very important for a healthy and well maintained home. Here we will look a bit at how insulation batts work and why they are so important.
The idea of insulation batts is of course to trap hot air in your loft and in your property so that it doesn’t escape through the roof. This is important because heat rises and if you don’t have a way to prevent it from rising through your roof then you will lose it into the atmosphere (heat rises to reach areas of lower pressure – now you know!). By using insulation batts you prevent that heat from escaping from your home and you can stay warm in your property.
There are other rolls of insulation batts though too, and this is the reason that they need to be constructed from fiber glass or other particular materials. The reason for this is that the insulation batts must also be safe in your property meaning that they won’t catch fire due to the amount of heat. If you were to use woodchip for instance, then the flammable nature might lead to a fire starting in your loft your attic. Likewise another important feature for insulation batts is that they mustn’t provide a habitat for infestations. You need to make sure that you aren’t going to have mice, cockroaches or rats living inside your insulation and for this reason it needs to be relatively ‘uncomfortable’. The scratchy nature of fiber glass here is perfect for deterring infestations.
It’s also important that your insulation batts not hold too much moisture. If they should, then that will cause your insulation to become damp and water logged when you have a cold day and this would then mean that you had lots of water against your roof. This would in turn potentially cause mold, or leaking, and it can also simply increase the amount of moisture in the environment which can be bad for your breathing and which can lead to asthma, eczema and a range of other problems. Choosing insulation batts then is a complex and important process and you need to be sure that you choose insulation that will be safe and not cause more problems.
Insulating your loft is highly important for many reasons in itself as well. If you fail to insulate then all that heating escaping from your roof will have numerous repercussions. First of all it will mean that you end up losing heat that you have paid for and this will mean that you need to generate more heat in order to reach a good temperature. In short it means a much higher energy bill that will cost your home a lot and that will cause you to lose money.
At the same time it means your property will be colder. This then means it will be more likely to become moist and the combination of both those factors means that you will suffer ill health effects.
All new homes in Australia are now required to have insulation batts installed, for environmental reasons. It is believed that good home insulation reduces energy usage.
