Fountain of Youth Stakes Attracts another Handful of Potential “Derbier’s”
The stakes race slated for 26th February, 2012 at the Gulfstream Park race track will be showcasing a few of the most anticipated three year old starters on their way to the Derby Day. The race, won last year by Soldat in a clear trip to wire, would be run at a shortened distance of one and one sixteenth of a mile compared to last year one and one eighth. The Grade 2 event is a $400,000, 1 1/16 miles race.
Following the Derby Trail on each of the racing tracks, suggests a possible clash of the titans, Hansen and Union Rags quite early than anticipated in the fight to the Triple Crown. Both the potential three year olds will be competing against each other after their last faceoff at the Breeder’s Cup Juveniles, this year at Fountain of Youth. Hansen who has already started in the Grade 3 Holy Bull Stakes on January 29th is a highly projected contender for the race. Here he could most possibly be challenging his prime rival Union Rags from trainer Michael Matz’s brigade. Union Rags has previously won the Champagne Stakes and finished second to Hansen in the Breeder’s Cup Juvenile.
Watching them in the Fountain of Youth 2012 could be an eye-catcher especially due to their boiling rivalry for the Triple Crown since their starts last year.
Touted as another great rivalry that could be witnessed in action again at the race is, the Casual Trick and Reveron pair. With their last race together being the Gulfstream Park Derby on New Year, Reveron quickly took up the lead as an early pace setter maintaining his position and holding off the closing Casual Trick till the wire. Casual Trick opened in another allowance race finishing a trailing eighth but the Bernardini colt may be up for the Fountain of Youth Stakes with some incredible step up in place by trainer Nick Zito. Reveron has recently finished third in Grade 3 Sam F. Davis Stakes and is a probable starter in this next critical Derby prep race.
Another possible entry to the race may be expected from trainer Todd Pletcher’s collection, El Padrino who finished third in the last year’s Grade 2 Remsen Stakes and has closed the deal for an allowance race this 29th January. His next start could be slated for the Fountain of Youth or the Gotham.
Lightly race as a two year old, another Bernardini colt, Algorithms is another contention Todd Pletcher would like to throw at the Fountain of Youth following his obvious win after pulling away from Hansen when asked. He won the race by 5 lengths and revisiting the Hansen – Algorithms chemistry on a race so critical to the Derby should sell tickets like hot cakes. Most certainly an event to watch out for.
