Powerful, Adhesive And Flexible Silicon Sealant
By: Shaun Hathaway
The use of silicon sealant has a number of advantages over many adhesives which are used today. One of its advantages is that it is flexible although at the same time it has some very powerful features. It can be used in a number of applications and many people have found its use to be of great significance. As a sealant, silicon has some characteristics that could be said to be ideal and one of them is that even after drying up, it remains sample. This characteristic though good has its own disadvantages but overall the product is highly useful in creating strong bonds.
Another advantage that is attributed to the use of this sealant is that it can easily withstand even the most intense temperatures. This makes it ideal for use on surfaces that exposed to high temperatures including the application on engine gaskets. Not many sealants can be able to function well in places where silicon sealant can be used and this makes it an important part of your repair projects.
Generally, silicon sealant comes in a number of different varieties one of them being that which is ready for use. And like all other types of sealants, most of the silicon adhesive starts drying up immediately it is exposed to the air and this means you must be careful and quick in your application. This is a good characteristic for a sealant that expected to give bonds that will last for a longer time.
The other type of silicon sealant normally comes in two different components that require to be mixed together before use. The sealant is made by mixing these two components together and the trickiest part about this type is that you can only mix the components a few minutes prior to its use.
The use of the sealant requires that you be swift in your application and especially ensure that you are precise with the application. This is because it will start holding together immediately it is exposed to the moisture in the air. This should not be a problem however since the excessive or unwanted silicon sealant can be removed easily by using a sharp object without messing up with the service.
There are different types of silicon sealants and one of them is referred to as pressure sensitive silicon. This is as a result of the technological advancement and it offers you a permanent bond adhering well to pressure applied to the bond. This simply means that one must apply some pressure on the area where it has been applied for a strong bond to be established. Otherwise, failure to do this will only see the sealant drying up without creating the desired bond.
Other types of silicon sealants include the RTV, thermoset sealant and radiation cured sealant or UV which requires the ultraviolet light to dry up. The thermoset sealant needs to be exposed to some heat in order to be cured. Silicon sealant can be used in a number of applications as aforementioned including engine sealing as well as other craft works that you might need to do bonding in.
