How to choose the best bath Sealant
By: Shaun Hathaway
The bathroom is one of the most important rooms in the home and therefore should be taken care of as much as possible. With its numerous usage and presence of water continually, its components should be in such a way that it will be hard to disintegrate as a result of the water. On the one hand, there are baths, tiles piping system to be installed and all these will need a proper bath sealant in order to avoid unnecessary leakage which might result to a lot of damages to the wall. The leaking water can be a source of accidents or even cause rotting and mould in the bathroom.
When looking for the best bath sealant, you should be able to consider a number of factors such as its durability upon application. There are many sealants in the market today that although they can offer a good result upon application, their durability level is very low and therefore you will be required to redo the work again. a sealant that has a high concentration of solvents that have been combined with it will not last for long as the solvents will definitely evaporate after some time.
Normally, the evaporation of the solvents results in the shrinkage of the substance and therefore will affect the bond. The shrinkage then causes the bond between the bath and the surface to disintegrate and this is caused by the low level of strength and grip on the part of the sealants. As you consider the best bath sealant, it is good to consider its level of adaptability to things such as water, steam and heat which are a common feature in the bathroom. Many baths normally detach from the surface after a short time and upon their exposure to the aforementioned factors.
There are other sealants that have a high level of adhesion but will still shrink after some time. The large amount of solvents normally becomes a source of trouble for these sealants even though they have the desired adhesion levels. The end result from these effects is that the area around the bath sealant turns black or develops some mildew. This is normally caused by the evaporation and the solvents that are present in the sealant. There are other sealants that have good cure possibilities but with time they will develop some cracks which become very good breeding spaces for bacteria.
The best polyurethane sealant normally does not have solvents and should be a hybrid polymer a characteristic that helps in ensuring that it does not shrink even after curing. With the best bonding features, a good adhesion normally gives your bath a good seal for a long time. With a good flexibility features polyurethane should be able to resist any kind of movements of the base material while at the same time defying any expansion. Some of the sealants are also odorless something that one might need to consider when shopping for good bath sealant. A sealant for the bath should also be able to produce very good results for tiles, plastic panels, wood, metal and mirrors among other items found in the bathroom.
It is however very key to ensure that your bath sealant is water resistant, heat resistant and at the same time ensure it does not shrink though it should be very supple.
