Helpful Tips for Reducing Your Heating Bills throughout Winter

One of the fasting increasing costs in any household at the moment is heating bills. Whether you us Gas or Electric or both the monthly cost of heating your home is getting higher and higher, and yet the only way to reduce these bills seems to be to turn your heating off.

But in a lot of cases that is simply not an option, especially if you are elderly, but there are many different ways of reducing your bills that are worth considering.

One of the best ways is actually to leave your heating on all the time. I know this sounds mad but if you couple this together with reducing your temperature setting by 2 or 3 degrees then you can save money overall.

If your house is well insulated then it will retain heat better than you think. However, turning your heating off during the day when you’re not in the house may seem like a good idea but during that time your house loses all its retained heat. So when you return, your house is cold, so you turn the heating on and it takes a while for that retained heat to return. During which time you aren’t feeling the benefit.

If you have rooms in your home that you rarely use, like a study or a dining room then make sure that the radiators in these rooms are switched off or on the lowest temperature setting. If you are unable to alter the settings on these radiators then contact your local central heating engineer and get him to replace the valves with temperature controlled ones. Whatever the cost, you should pay for it in no time by not wasting money heating these empty rooms.

Another important area that is often missed is the efficiency of your central heating system to heat your home. Like most household appliances boilers and radiators are at their most efficient when they are a few years old. But after a few years deposits can build up within the internal workings of the system that can dramatically reduce its ability to heat your home. Independent research has proved that a dirty system can reduce system effectiveness by up to 15%. Whilst this doesn’t sound too bad considering it may be over ten years old, it could be costing you hundreds of pounds a year.

Central heating water heating treatments ensure that your heating system is clean and running as efficiently as possible. These products contain additives that sweep through your heating system removing blockages caused by build up’s of lime scale and other potentially damaging substances. It then keeps your system in tiptop condition saving you money and keeping your home as warm as possible for the cheapest amount of money.

So next time your central heating system is due a service ask your local heating engineer to give the whole heating system a good flush. If you live in an area of the country that suffers from hard water then you are more likely to have blockages caused by lime scale and black magnetite sludge, black fragments of rust that can get stuck in your radiators and pipe work. If these blockages are not treated then they can damage your radiators and pipe work and even more costly items like pumps and eventually the boiler itself.
